SO BIG!! SO SMART!!!

January 2010: Wynter begins matching words from the "Any Baby Can Read" Program. Her first three words are gorilla, eyes and wave. She is able to match all three!! She even reads the word "Gorilla" on her own. This is her new favorite word...always learning the hard words first. That's Wynter for ya...surprising us all the time! She also has learned her colors very well. She enjoys matching her color blocks to their correct peg. She is also learning counting with blocks. The blocks have a different number of holes in each one. She has to figure out how they fit on the pegs by the number of holes. Her fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and problem solving skills are really improving as she learns to turn the blocks so they fit correctly on the pegs. We are so proud of her! She is so smart!

CATCH UP update!

It has been a busy 6 months. I have had several major surgeries; Our family has grown as we have adopted a little boy named Michael who is 6 years old; we got an old english sheepdog who we would like to train as a therapy dog for Wynter...someday :)

Wynter regressed a little in the potty training area since we have had a lot of changes and different people helping us out through my surgeries. She is holding it longer, and will still potty on the toilet when you take her, but is no longer telling us that she has to "go".

She has started the learning program through DSACT & is also doing "any baby can read". We watch the movie daily & work with flash cards & books. After about 6 weeks, she can read: dog/cat/eyes/mouth/nose/gorilla & clap consistently. This seems to have also helped her vocalize more as well. My hope is to add one new word each week (or two, depending on how she is picking things up).
We started by making two sets of flash cards of things that we had around the house. we placed two items in front of her, then handed her the matching card and asked her to put it on top of the its match. It took about 20 minutes for her to fully understand the concept (we did some hand over hand, with lots of praise)....but then after the second day we could place several cards in front of her & you could see her look at the cards first, then match them all.

We started with matching flashcard items from around the house, then moved to colors as you can see in the videos. We also verbally have her label them as she goes :) articulation is not there, but at least she is vocalizing. Currently at 35 months old she has 62 verbal words.
Her attention span here at 35 months old seems to be about 20 minutes. We are currently working on transference: matching a flashcard pig to a toy pig and a stuffed animal pig: "ALL ARE PIGS". etc.

Wynter is climbing up playscapes and slidding down, she is running a lot better but we are still working on knee flexion. You can see in the video that she can walk up & down stairs independently, although we are still working on reciprocal patterning, & getting her to walk heel~toe.

Wynter had her very first ear infection ever in December & a cough over this up & down weather we are having, including a case of hives for some reason that we are still trying to figure out. But she remains very healthy for the most part. JANUARY 1st marked ONE year of being on the growth hormone injections for her IGF1 deficiency. She has made remarkable improvements. Her tone has changed dramatically and she grew 6 INCHES!!!!!! PRAISE GOD!

28 Months Old: Wynter and the "learning program" . This was her second day matching flash cards and practicing at home(see Learning program to learn more).

End of Summer

It has been a CRAZY month. While potty training Wytner, we had a flood in the house (hardwood flooring and carpet had to all be tore out), then our vans AC went out ($800), Adam has been working 60+ hours plus at work and Zachary starts school next week.
Potty training is going pretty good. It is no onvernight process like it was with Zach, but she is doing very well. She is "holding" it longer now, and getting better about answering yes or no when asked if she has to go. I can sometimes trust her answer too :) She will tell us occasionally that she has to go, but we still seem to be mostly on the "potty timing" rather than the "potty training", but I have no doubt that she wil get it! She will happily go when you put her on the potty and will say pee-pee and bye-bye as we flush :) The hard part is that we are still learning that we dont ALSO go in our panties :)

I was SOOO proud of her this week...she was playing really great at the pool: walking nicely through thigh deep water (keeping her balance) and walking/climbing up the water slide by herself. She even managed to hold sitting posture while sliding down the water slide into tummy deep water....she did this over and over againg for 30 minutes!

Evaluation

Well, Wynter had her 2 year old evaluation and all together it tests many areas and is very detailed...But she still seemed to score at 20 months. GREAT JOB WYTNER!! All in all she has about 24 words of things that she labels and still a few signs, but we are trying to not give her an "easy way out" since she seems to be picking up the verbal. We will give her a sign only if needed to avoid frusteration.

Looks like she is ready to potty train. She has been going pee when we ask her to "go potty" since she was 15 months old...but is now showing signs that she is ready....I AM NOT.... Even while we were on vacation, she went into the bathroom, pulled up her shirt and tried to lift the toilet seat. I asked her if she needed to go potty and she shook her head yes. I put her on, AND SHE WOULD GO! Once she even went poopy!

My family in Chicago had a GREAT time getting to know her and Zach. We will miss them!

28 Months Old: playing with the water hose. Talking. Now up to about 24 words. YAY!!

2 YEARS OLD!!!!

April 27th 2009: Congratulations Wynter! Since starting the HGH you have grown about 4 inches, gained 2 lbs., your head circumference has changed and you have built enough muscle to learn how to walk! We can actually SEE muscles in your body now. We are all so proud of everything you have accomplished!

Lets briefly recap Wytners “program”: She gets Cranial Sacral done twice a month, Pt, Ot, and St done by ND therapists each ~weekly. She eats a gluten and casein free diet. She has a blend of about 12 different supplements on every given day (twice a day) to help balance out her nutrition deficiencies. ECI comes out once a month to check on her progress and maybe offer helpful tips. She has been very healthy, only sick a few times with a cough. Wytner you are very blessed.

Zachary has had a great time at “school” and awana both this year. He loves his teachers and all of his new friends. Zach is by far, Wynters favorite person in the whole world. His tooth looks great and we went strawberry picking with the Sweds and had a blast!!! I even “chilled out” and let him play in the mud.... after we got cleaned up, we all went and saw a movie, it was really a great day together! I miss all of the time that I get to spend with Zachary. He is already growing up too fast!!

Adam and I have been married for 9 years now. It is amazing to think how things have changed... at times I feel very old. For our anniversary we went to a Susan Peoples conference about “ How kids with Down Syndrome Learn”. The Sweds watched the kids for us (this was the first time we have ever left Wynter) and we drove to the conference....unfortunatly I threw up the who way, so by the time we reached the hotel, I went to sleep. Not the best way to spend your first “alone time” in two years :( Better luck next time! That next weekend I went to a special needs potty training class.... wow, that is all I can say!

23 months old: walking with SPIO on! (see therapy, Neurodevelopmetal OR EZ at home tools. Way to go Wynter!!!!

March 2009

23 Months: Zach needs surgery to remove a tooth that broke and to put a spacer in so we don't have space issues later. Poor Boy. He looked horrible after he woke up. It took him a few days to get used to the way the spacer felt...but he never really complained about pain. Thank you lord! I am glad to say that after several unfortunate issues of doctors leaving their practices etc. We finally have a good pediatrician and endocrinologist for the kids. Yeah! This is no small feat! Oops' spoke to soon, one of them just moved their practice 2 ½ hours away.....that creates a longer drive for us every three months. O well. Maybe now I can try and figure out where all my headaches are coming from. We stayed one night in a nursing home, as one of the hurdles we needed to cross trying to get into the MDCP program. Besides the beeping and the huge springS in my back, the train whistle only went off every hour. :) I wasn't that bad. Glad that is over with! Now to hurry up and start the waiting game.
